Oryx by Gissah is a commanding leather fragrance for women and men, released in 2024 as part of the Soul of Arabia collection. Inspired by the Arabian oryx, the composition contrasts crisp apple and luminous jasmine with earthy patchouli, precious saffron and a powerful foundation of leather and oud. It begins unexpectedly fresh before steadily becoming darker, warmer and distinctly more animalic.
The opening combines jasmine and apple. Apple contributes a crisp, juicy freshness while jasmine immediately introduces a rich white-floral character. It’s an interesting juxtaposition—the fruit keeps the opening bright while jasmine hints at the heavier oriental character waiting underneath.
At the heart, patchouli and saffron dramatically change the atmosphere. Saffron brings its dry, warm, slightly metallic spice while patchouli introduces earthy depth and woody darkness. Together they strip away much of the opening’s freshness and establish the richer Arabian character of the fragrance.
The drydown belongs to leather and oud. Leather provides a dark, textured and slightly animalic quality while oud contributes dense woody richness. Neither feels particularly restrained here; they form a substantial foundation beneath the lingering saffron and patchouli, giving Oryx its boldest and most persistent character.
Oryx thrives on the progression from fresh fruit and white flowers into saffron, earth, leather and oud. The apple makes its entrance surprisingly approachable, but the fragrance steadily reveals something considerably darker—a rugged oriental-leather composition with unmistakable Middle Eastern character.
Oryx feels like crossing the Arabian desert beneath a sky crowded with stars—crisp green apple and jasmine carried briefly through the cool night air before glowing saffron begins rising from the dunes. Earthy patchouli settles around burning incense as the silhouette of an oryx appears along the distant ridge. Deeper into the night, dark leather and smoldering oud take control, leaving a powerful trail of spice, wood and smoke against the endless desert.
