Gypsy Water Absolu by Byredo is a richer, darker and considerably more textured interpretation of the house’s iconic Gypsy Water. Released in 2026 and created by perfumer Jérôme Epinette, this woody spicy amber fragrance preserves the nomadic, forest-bound atmosphere of the original while replacing much of its airy citrus sweetness with smoky incense, earthy iris, peppered evergreens and supple suede.
The opening immediately feels more substantial than the original. Bergamot provides a sparkling flash of freshness before black pepper introduces a dry, prickling spice. Pine needle absolute runs directly through the opening, creating the sensation of crushed evergreen needles and cool forest air rather than the brighter lemon-and-juniper character associated with the original Gypsy Water.
The heart becomes considerably darker and more atmospheric through incense absolute, orris butter and carrot seed. Incense produces an airy trail of smoke with a subtly charred quality, while creamy orris adds smoothness and refinement. Carrot seed contributes an earthy, root-like warmth that gives the fragrance an almost mineral texture—dry soil, tree roots and powdery woods beneath the smoke.
As Gypsy Water Absolu settles, vanilla absolute, white suede and ambroxan emerge. Vanilla provides warmth and restrained sweetness without turning the fragrance overtly gourmand, while white suede creates a soft, tactile quality. Ambroxan extends the composition with a diffusive amber-woody trail, allowing the incense and evergreen character to linger against the skin.
Compared with the original, Absolu feels less carefree and more mysterious. The familiar forest atmosphere remains, but the landscape has changed. The sunlight has disappeared, the campfire is burning, and the woods have become darker. Pine, smoke, pepper, suede and vanilla give it considerably more depth while maintaining the effortless wearability that made Gypsy Water distinctive.
Gypsy Water Absolu feels like wandering deep into a pine forest after nightfall—a carved caravan glowing softly between towering trees as a campfire burns beneath the midnight canopy. Bergamot and black pepper cut through the cold air while crushed pine needles cover the forest floor. Incense smoke curls between the trunks, mingling with earthy orris and roots before vanilla, white suede and warm amber woods emerge beside the dying embers. Familiar yet transformed, Gypsy Water Absolu takes the wandering spirit of the original and follows it deeper into the woods.
