Reception by Amouage is a richly textured ambery, spicy woody fragrance for women and men, released in 2025 and composed by perfumer Pierre Negrin for Amouage’s Essences Collection. Conceived around the idea of generosity and Middle Eastern hospitality, Reception combines aromatic spices, roasted coffee and evergreen freshness with Omani frankincense, polished woods, vanilla and palo santo. It feels welcoming and comforting, but retains the resinous complexity and darkness associated with Amouage.

The opening is unusually elaborate, combining coffee, pink pepper, pine, labdanum, coriander, juniper and lemon. Lemon provides an initial flash of brightness while juniper and pine create a cool evergreen freshness. Coriander and pink pepper contribute dry aromatic spice, while labdanum introduces resinous warmth. Coffee sits underneath rather than dominating, giving the opening a roasted, gently bitter richness.

At the heart, frankincense, patchouli and cedarwood pull Reception firmly into Amouage territory. Frankincense provides a mineralic, resinous smoke while cedar creates a dry woody framework. Patchouli adds earthiness and depth, gradually transforming the brighter aromatic opening into something darker and more contemplative.

The drydown combines palo santo, vanilla, musk and cypriol. Palo santo provides aromatic, gently smoky woodiness while cypriol introduces an earthy, dry and slightly leathery quality. Vanilla softens those darker materials with restrained sweetness, and musk rounds the composition into a smoother, more enveloping finish.

Reception is presented as a 30% Essence de Parfum. Its concentrate undergoes a ten-week infusion with sandalwood chips, while the alcohol is separately aged for six months in oakwood barrels. That additional sandalwood-and-oak patina reinforces the already substantial woody structure, helping the spices, incense and vanilla feel unusually polished and integrated.

What makes Reception interesting is its balance of fresh aromatics, roasted coffee, sacred resins and creamy woods. It isn’t a conventional coffee gourmand—the coffee is woven into pine, spices and incense rather than surrounded by heavy sweetness. As the fragrance develops, the brighter opening gradually gives way to frankincense, cedar, palo santo and vanilla, creating something considerably deeper than the first spray suggests.

Reception feels like arriving at a secluded mountain estate as evening fog rolls through the valley—lemon, juniper and pine cutting through the cold air while coriander and pink pepper scatter across dark stone. Freshly roasted coffee provides warmth as frankincense begins rising between flickering lanterns. Cedar, patchouli and earthy cypriol emerge as darkness settles over the mountains, while palo santo, vanilla and soft musk leave behind a warm trail of aromatic woods, smoke and quiet hospitality.
