Reasons by Amouage is a complex woody spicy fragrance for women and men, released in 2024 and composed by master perfumer Bertrand Duchaufour for Amouage’s Essences Collection. Designed around the idea that the past continues to shape the present, Reasons moves from toasted hazelnut and aromatic spices into green woods, davana and patchouli before settling into an unusually elaborate foundation of sandalwood, palo santo, resins, moss and smoke.

The opening combines cardamom, hazelnut, cinnamon and schinus molle. Hazelnut provides a warm, gently roasted nuttiness rather than overt gourmand sweetness, while cardamom brings cool aromatic spice. Cinnamon adds warmth and schinus molle contributes a peppery, slightly fruity brightness, creating an opening that feels textured, dry and quietly inviting.

The heart becomes greener and considerably more intricate through patchouli, pine, cashmeran, amber, cypriol and davana. Pine introduces the atmosphere of dark evergreen woods, while patchouli and cypriol contribute earthy depth. Cashmeran provides a smooth woody-musky texture, and amber adds warmth. Davana is especially distinctive, bringing an unusual herbaceous, fruity and subtly liquor-like quality that continually shifts against the woods.

The base is expansive, combining benzoin, cistus, sandalwood, cedarwood, vetiver, myrrh, oakmoss, musks and palo santo. Sandalwood provides creamy warmth while cedar and vetiver create a drier woody framework. Benzoin, cistus and myrrh introduce balsamic resinous richness, oakmoss contributes earthy depth, and palo santo finishes the composition with its characteristic smoky, aromatic woodiness.

Reasons is presented as a 30% Essence de Parfum and undergoes Amouage’s extended Essences ageing ritual: the bio-ethanol is infused for six months in oakwood barrels, while the perfume concentrate undergoes a separate six-month infusion with sandalwood chips before final maceration. The resulting sandalwood-and-oakwood patina reinforces the fragrance’s already substantial woody architecture.

What makes Reasons distinctive is the way it avoids becoming either a conventional gourmand or a straightforward forest fragrance. Hazelnut and cinnamon suggest warmth and sweetness, pine and davana introduce wild greenery, and the enormous woody-resinous base gradually pulls everything toward something darker, earthier and more meditative.

Reasons feels like walking deep into an ancient evergreen forest as the final sunlight disappears through the canopy—crushed cardamom and pink pepper scattered across damp stone beside toasted hazelnuts and cinnamon. Pine needles and aromatic davana emerge through the mist as earthy patchouli and cypriol sink into the forest floor. Deeper within, palo santo smolders beside sandalwood, cedar and glowing resins, while myrrh, moss and vetiver settle into the darkness, leaving an atmospheric trail of spice, smoke, earth and time-worn woods.
