Opus XVI – Timber by Amouage is a monumental woody amber fragrance that explores wood not simply as an ingredient, but as something ancient, living and almost spiritual. Released in 2025 as part of Amouage’s Library Collection and created by perfumer Alexis Grugeon, Timber builds an imposing structure of towering woods, aromatic spices and glowing resins.
The opening immediately establishes its scale with cardamom, lavender and pink pepper. Cardamom provides a cool, aromatic spice while pink pepper adds brightness and subtle heat. Lavender brings an unexpectedly clean aromatic quality, creating the sensation of cool air moving through an immense forest before the heavier woods begin to emerge.
At its heart, Timber becomes dramatically more substantial. Cedarwood, fir balsam, frankincense and juniper form a dense woodland accord that feels simultaneously dry, resinous and green. Cedar provides the structural backbone, while fir balsam introduces the scent of evergreen needles and sticky sap. Juniper contributes an aromatic freshness, while frankincense sends ribbons of mineralic smoke through the composition.
The drydown is immense, revealing oud, sandalwood, patchouli, vanilla and additional resinous woods. Oud adds darkness and density without completely dominating the composition, while sandalwood gives the base a smoother, creamier texture. Patchouli reinforces the earthy forest-floor quality as warmer balsamic and subtly sweet facets gradually emerge.
Despite its name, Timber isn’t simply a fragrance that smells like freshly cut lumber. It captures an entire forest ecosystem—bark, sap, roots, evergreen needles, damp earth, smoke and enormous tree trunks warmed by scattered rays of sunlight. There is something primordial about it, yet the construction remains polished and unmistakably Amouage.
Opus XVI Timber feels like standing alone within an ancient forest just before sunrise—towering trees disappearing into blue mist as golden beams suddenly break through the canopy. Cedar, fir and juniper surround the forest floor while cardamom and pink pepper scatter through the cool air. Frankincense smoke curls between the trunks before sinking into dark oud, sandalwood, patchouli and resin-soaked timber beneath your feet.
