Opus XV – King Blue by Amouage is a daring woody amber fragrance released in 2023 as part of the Library Collection. Created by Jordi Fernández and Karine Vinchon-Spehner, it contrasts radiant citrus with dark oud, smoke, leather and woods.
The opening flashes with mandarin orange—juicy, luminous and bittersweet—before quickly colliding with the fragrance’s darker character. Amber and frankincense emerge through the heart, adding warmth and Amouage’s signature mineralic smoke while the citrus continues flickering above the resins.
The base plunges into oud, leather, patchouli, sandalwood and oakwood. Oud provides powerful darkness, leather introduces an animalic edge, and patchouli adds damp earthiness. Sandalwood smooths the composition while oakwood reinforces its massive woody structure.
King Blue deliberately embraces smoke, animalic leather, bitter citrus, resin and raw wood rather than presenting oud as polished or crowd-pleasing. Mandarin acts like a beam of light repeatedly cutting through the darkness.
King Blue feels like entering an abandoned royal throne room after midnight—navy curtains disappearing into darkness as chandeliers burn above black marble. Mandarin glows against the shadows while frankincense smoke rises toward the ceiling. Amber smolders beside ancient woods before oud, leather, patchouli and sandalwood consume the room. Regal, dangerous and hypnotic, it’s the scent of power after everyone else has left the palace.
