Lustre by Amouage is an opulent woody floral fragrance for women and men, released in 2024 and composed by perfumers Julien Rasquinet and Paul Guerlain as part of Amouage’s prestigious Essences Collection. Built around luminous cardamom, powdery orris and an exceptionally creamy sandalwood core, Lustre gradually descends into a dense foundation of resins, vanilla, woods and balsams. The result is polished and radiant at first, but increasingly warm, shadowy and enveloping as it develops.

The opening combines cardamom and orris. Cardamom provides an effervescent aromatic spice, bringing brightness and energy to an otherwise deep composition. Orris immediately softens that sharpness with its elegant powdery texture, creating a creamy, almost silken quality that gives Lustre its distinctive sense of refinement.

At the heart, patchouli, sandalwood and cedarwood create the fragrance’s woody structure. Sandalwood is particularly important, providing an exceptionally smooth, creamy richness that merges naturally with the powderiness of orris. Cedarwood introduces dryness and definition, while patchouli brings earthy depth and prevents the composition from becoming overly soft.

The drydown is considerably more elaborate, combining benzoin, labdanum, vanilla, Ambrarome, cypriol, styrax, tonka bean and myrrh. Benzoin and vanilla create a warm balsamic sweetness while labdanum and styrax contribute darker resinous textures. Myrrh adds smoky, medicinal warmth, cypriol introduces dry earthiness and Ambrarome reinforces the composition’s deep ambered character. Tonka bean smooths the entire structure with a subtle creamy sweetness.

Lustre is part of Amouage’s Essences Collection, where the ageing process becomes part of the composition itself. It is presented at an exceptional 30% perfume-oil concentration and undergoes an extended six-month ageing process involving sandalwood chips and oakwood barrels. That process gives the fragrance an additional woody patina, making the sandalwood, resins and ambered materials feel unusually rounded and integrated.

Lustre feels like entering an ancient palace illuminated only by hundreds of candles—cardamom flickering through the darkness as pale orris creates a soft glow against polished stone. Sandalwood and cedar warm beneath drifting incense while earthy patchouli gathers in the shadows. As the candles burn lower, benzoin, labdanum, myrrh and styrax begin to smolder beside creamy vanilla and tonka, leaving behind a seamless trail of powdered iris, sacred resins, amber and deeply polished woods.
