Lineage by Amouage is an unconventional spicy aquatic amber fragrance that captures the meeting point between the sea and the Omani desert. Released in 2023 and created by perfumer Karine Vinchon-Spehner, Lineage combines fiery spices, mineralic freshness and Amouage’s signature resins into something that feels simultaneously salty, smoky, dry and radiant.
The opening immediately announces its unusual character with ginger, Sichuan pepper, schinus molle and saffron. Ginger brings a sharp, almost electric freshness while Sichuan pepper adds a tingling mineral spice. Schinus molle contributes an aromatic pepperiness, and saffron introduces a warm, slightly leathery dimension. Beneath everything is a distinctive salty sensation that evokes heated skin and sea air rather than a conventional blue aquatic accord.
The heart moves firmly into Amouage territory with frankincense essence, fenugreek and myrrh essence. Frankincense rises through the composition like cool smoke, while myrrh adds a darker balsamic bitterness. Fenugreek is the wildcard, contributing an unusual nutty, subtly sweet warmth that contrasts beautifully against the mineral and resinous qualities surrounding it.
As Lineage develops, the incense becomes deeper and richer through frankincense resinoid and myrrh resinoid, joined by vetiver, patchouli, benzoin and labdanum. Vetiver introduces dry earthiness, patchouli provides woody depth, and benzoin and labdanum create a warmer amber glow beneath the cooler mineral facets.
The fascinating part of Lineage is how it refuses to settle neatly into either an aquatic or an incense fragrance. There’s an almost constant tension between salt and smoke, heat and coolness, dry earth and humid sea air. The resins feel ancient and ceremonial, while the pepper, ginger and mineral qualities make the fragrance feel strikingly modern.
Lineage feels like crossing an ancient Omani palace at dusk after arriving from the shores of Masirah—ginger and saffron scattered across dark stone while Sichuan pepper crackles through cool, salt-laden air. Frankincense smoke rises toward carved arches as bowls of myrrh and benzoin glow beneath hanging lamps. Vetiver roots and patchouli bring the dry earth of the desert inside, leaving sea spray, warm stone and sacred incense suspended together in the darkness. Strange, meditative and deeply atmospheric, Lineage smells less like a conventional perfume and more like a place remembered from a dream.
